For a decade, The Brooklyn Greenway Initiative has acted as the catalyst for the establishment, development and long-term stewardship of the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway. The Greenway consists of 23 capital projects spanning 14 miles of the Brooklyn waterfront from Greenpoint to Bay Ridge. And their headquarters are right here on Columbia Street. The Amazing Garden (photo above) is a gorgeous community garden at the corner of Columbia and Carroll. Every year they host an annual Grilled Sandwich Competition with live music and food from some of the best restaurants in the area. Yum!
A great place to visit with the kids on the weekend is the South Brooklyn Children’s Garden on Columbia and Sackett. Their mission is to teach families to connect with their sources and foster the community by working together to grow food, offering educational programs, and hosting events.
The Backyard Community Garden sits across six lots at the corner of Summit and Van Brunt and features some interesting food and short footpath around the park.
The first established community green space in the CSWD is The Human Compass Garden. This neighborhood meet-up spot is at the corner of Columbia and Sackett and the caretakers of this site work with local community boards and elected officials to protect green space and expand neighborhood activism and arts programming.
Van Voorhees Park is a NYC public park featuring two outdoor tennis courts, a large playground and several recreation areas dedicated to baseball, handball, basketball and more.
Adjacent to Mother Cabrini Playground at the corner of President Street and Van Brunt, The Urban Meadow hosts a variety of outdoor events like The Red Hook Jazz Festival and the Annual Halloween Parade. And of course they are a fully functioning community garden as well.
Ever heard of this little thing called Brooklyn Bridge Park? Sports, beachfront, art, playgrounds, fishing, boating, food, outdoor movies, live theatre…this is one of New York City’s most unique locations. And the entrance to Pier 6 is right at the foot of Columbia Street on Atlantic Avenue.
